On Wednesday, we joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day 2023. The UN have themed this year’s celebration around innovation and technology and with Puddle being a digital marketing agency, we couldn’t be happier to celebrate women in our industry.
To continue the recognition and celebration, we had the women who work here at Puddle Agency tell us a little about their roles at and what International Women’s Day means to them:
Mary Mendy:
- Tell us about your role at Puddle Agency.
Hi, I’m Mary, the Project Manager here at Puddle! I manage the projects at Puddle and coordinate activities and retainers for the team.
- What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
International women’s day, for me, is not just about being a woman but about celebrating my intersectionality; it is a powerful moment to reflect and celebrate how women’s role in society is increasingly becoming more prominent and important, all thanks to the amazing things that women have done and keep doing.
- Who is your female role model?
My female role model is my mother. She has faced incredible adversity as she’s balanced a career, family, and the hurdle of being an immigrant in the UK with three children. In 2015, she finished her postgraduate degree and now works in HR in the NHS. My mother has taught me that hard times can be overcome and that losing battles can be won. She always encouraged me to continue to dream and work to achieve those dreams. My mum has been an incredible example of how to be a mum and how to empower other women in their careers. She works in HR in the NHS and always extends a hand to me in the professional world when I need it. She has always espoused grace, resolve and courage. She was adamant about me being the same, as she felt that these qualities would give me the strength to confront whatever would be presented to me in life.
- Why do you think International Women’s Day is important?
International Women’s Day reminds me of how far we have come as women, but also how much work is still left to do and the many ways in which women are coming together to drive positive change. It is also very important because it is a celebration of women but probably, more importantly, can be used as an opportunity to raise up women who aren’t celebrated enough.
Izzy Miller:
- Tell us about your role at Puddle Agency.
Hi, I’m Izzy, the In-House Copywriter here at Puddle! As a copywriter, I look after any copy needs for our clients, whether it be web copy, blog articles, newsletters, brochures or brand books. You name it, I’ll write it! I work closely with other members of the team to make sure copy is correct, reads well and suits the tone of voice of the clients we work with.
- What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
To me, International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate the incredible achievements of women across the world and recognise those who kicked down doors to get us to places we are currently at, a place where we see rising numbers of women in CEO positions, and we are celebrated.
- Who is your female role model?
My female role model is always changing! But today, it has to be Dolly Parton. Not only is her music an instant mood lifter, but she is also a successful businesswoman and just an all round icon! My favourite Dolly quote is: “I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb – and I’m not blonde either”.
- Why do you think International Women’s Day is important?
Despite lots being done over the last couple of decades, there still is more we could do to empower women across the world! I feel very lucky to live in a country and work at a place where I feel empowered as a woman, but that’s not the case for everyone.
Daisy Cliff:
- Tell us about your role at Puddle.
Hi, I’m Daisy, the Social Media Manager here at Puddle! I manage the day-to-day handling of all social media channels by assisting in helping our clients to boost their online presence through the use of social media, whether this is through social media posts on a variety of different platforms or via paid advertising.
- What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
International Women’s Day is a special time to reflect on the progress made over women’s rights and equality. Unfortunately, women haven’t always been able to work, vote or receive the same rights as men. On this day, women join in to celebrate all the fantastic achievements of women to make a positive impact worldwide.
- Who is your female role model?
My female role model is Zendaya. Many people know of Zendaya for her role in Disney channel; however, she is also the perfect role model. Due to how body image is portrayed on social media, many women lack body confidence over what they see online. In 2015, Modeliste, the magazine, attempted to use a photoshopped image of her without her permission. She then released the following statement on her Instagram account while also releasing the real picture – “These are the things that make women self-conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self-love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic.”. Because of this, I value Zendaya for being honest, as many things you see online are fake, which is why it negatively impacts many women.
- Why do you think International Women’s Day is important?
International Women’s Day is important for many different reasons. The main reason being spreading how important equal rights are and that just because we’re women, it doesn’t mean we should be treated any differently than men. It’s also the perfect time to educate those who don’t understand the importance of many reasons addressed during International Women’s Day.
